The murder mystery plot

We offer a choice of two plots for a murder mystery at Hotel du Vin Birmingham – Sherlock Holmes: The Case Of The Magician’s Inventor and Dead Dogs Tell No Tales.

Sherlock Holmes: The Case Of The Magician’s Inventor – Queen Victoria is dead. The British Empire is at its height. But from ‎across the shores a storm is brewing, a storm that could change the whole world forever. What is the link between world politics, a rundown theatre in the West End and an eccentric inventor? Travel back in time and meet the master detective, Mr Sherlock Holmes, as he unravels the case.

Dead Dogs Tell No Tales – London, the 70’s. Criminals and the Flying Squad at each other’s throats. Now a case to blow everything apart – Terry ‘The Dog’ Mitchell, small-time crook, has been found murdered. But Terry knew a secret, a secret which could shake London to its very core. A new, exciting interactive murder mystery from West End Events and the chance to step into the shadowy world of 1970’s London crime.

Group sizes

You will need to nominate between 8 and 12 guests to play the part of suspects. Any guests above this number need not be left out though as there are plenty of jobs for willing detectives; making notes during the suspect testimonies, examining clues and trying to uncover the murderer.

For groups of 26+ a second actor playing the detective’s assistant is included free-of-charge. 

Format of the murder mystery

Ahead of your murder mystery at Hotel du Vin Birmingham, a number of your guests will be supplied with clues, secrets and motives which will see them suspected of committing the most horrendous of crimes (have you guessed what it is yet!?). Then, on the day in question, our detective will attend the venue to quiz the suspects. The plot will unfold as each guest discovers their part in the events that resulted in a murder, finally leading to the shocking revelation that one of them is a killer!

The interactive nature of this event makes it perfect for a variety of different occasions including corporate team building days, work Christmas parties, adult birthday parties, hen nights and stag parties.

The approximate duration of the murder mystery and the dinner is 2.5 to 3 hours.

Venue location and style

Hotel du Vin Birmingham can be found on Church Street, right in the heart of the city. The hotel is situated on the edge of the Jewellery Quarter, just a 2 minute walk from St Philip’s Cathedral. Dating back to 1884, this former eye hospital has now been converted into a 66-bed boutique hotel. The designers have been careful to preserve much of the Victorian style whilst still adding many unique features to the various spaces in the hotel.

The venue offers two fantastic drinking spaces; the Bubble Lounge on the ground floor and Pub du Vin in what used to be the Cellar Bar. The Bubble Lounge takes its inspiration from Venice’s Cafe Florin and offers over 30 champagnes and a large selection of wines by the glass. Pub du Vin also has an impressive range of drinks, but this time the speciality is its local ales and international bottled beers. Pub du Vin was previously voted into CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide 2013. 

Hotel du Vin Birmingham private dining rooms

At Hotel du Vin Birmingham you can enjoy the delicious cuisine of the Bistro in one of five private dining rooms; Sassicaia, Lombard, Opus One, the Wine Cellar and Belle Epoque. Two of the smaller rooms, Sassicaia and Opus One, both have direct access to the outdoor courtyard whilst Belle Epoque is the largest of the spaces, seating up to 100 people. All of the rooms are completely unique, just as you would expect from any venue in the du Vin collection.

Our interactive murder mysteries can be tailored to run to your schedule, whether around a lunch or a dinner. But as a rough guide the murder mystery parties usually follow the following format:

7.00pm – Guests arrive for Prosecco welcome drink

7.30pm –  Murder mystery begins

7.50pm –  Dinner is served

10.00pm – Carriages

Please treat the above as a guide rather than an exact schedule.

At all of our parties we want our guests to feel comfortable and have a great time.

Our interactive murder mystery nights work really well when guests dress up as the parts that they will be playing. For instance, a police officer or wealthy baroness. That said, we don’t enforce a dress code so we’ll leave the decision up to you and your guests

We cater for all dietary requirements and these can be noted on the paperwork we send once you have booked. The only exception is kosher which requires specialist caterers so please contact us for more information.

We require a deposit of £30+VAT per guest in order to secure your booking, the final balance is due four weeks before the party.

What preparation is required for the event?

You’ll need to invite your guests and then provide us with a list of their names. You’ll also need to let us know which of the guests is playing the part of a suspect.

The actor will contact the suspects with their character information and let them know what to expect. The suspects will need to familiarise themselves with a small amount of information but there are no scripted lines to rehearse. All of the questions the detective asks them during the murder mystery can be answered from the notes we provide.

We’ll ask the organiser to fill in a function sheet detailing any dietary requirements, menu selections (where applicable) and optional drinks orders.

If you’ve decided to dress up you’ll need to think about your costumes. Suspects can be guided by their character information, other guests can go for anything that fits with the theme you’ve selected.

The booking process 

The first step is to contact us and check availability of your preferred date and time. If you decide to go ahead we’d issue an invoice which can be paid via bank transfer or credit / debit card (we accept American Express). We take a deposit payment of £30+VAT per person at the time of booking with the final balance due 6 weeks prior to the event.
